Wetzlar - City of Optics

Wetzlar is a business location with tradition. What began in the 10th century as a small market place with craftsmen and traders, became the "capital of law" for some years, was immortalised in literature and church architecture, was a garrison city, wrote industrial history in the iron handling and production and later in the optics industry, and developed into an up-and-coming business location with international reputation.

Today, Wetzlar is a location, where above all the metal production, mechanical and optoelectrical industries are at home, but is also famous for high quality electrotechnnical and electric products. Wetzlar companies such as Leitz, Buderus, Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH, Loh, VDO or Philips find global markets. Many high-perfomance, middle-class companies have also settled in Wetzlar.

In the last years more and more new companies discover the City of Wetzlar as an ideal business location with optimal development possibilities. The reasons are not only the central location of the city in the European highway network and the accessibility of the Rhein-Main area with airport, stockmarket, trade shows and international banks, the well-built industrial zones and the development of new business estates, but also the innovative milieu, to which the middle-class structure and the proximity to the university and polytechnic university in the neighbouring city of Gießen contribute. Furthermore, the polytechnic university in Wetzlar, with the dual "Studium Plus," offers a course of study tailored to the needs of the economy, to specifically educate future experts. Many promising companies have found business premises and created jobs in the industrial zone Spilburg, a former federal military compound.

Surrounded by an attractive park-like landscape, a unique symbiosis of technical-oriented companies and diverse culture and sport opportunities is created. The companies also appreciate the good relationship with the municipal administration with shorter licensing procedures as well as the high degree of communication and cooperation between politics, administration and economy in the entire region. The Economic Department and the Business Development Agency also help quickly and unbureaucratically in the providing of business real estate and contracts to different companies. Furthermore, the city development policy has been conducts for some time an intensive city marketing, to improve the living and job conditions in the city for all.

The City of Wetzlar lies in Central Hesse and has around 53,000 residents today. It is the county seat of the Lahn-Dill County, and is an important regional centre for 300,000 people in the region. A high quality of life in an intact environment, excellent shopping opportunities, attractive education offers, a multifaceted cultural life and numerous recreational offers, an artistic historic city as well as modern event venues also for conventions and congresses, make Wetzlar an attractive business location.

In the last decades, tourism has gained importance as an economic factor for the City of Wetzlar. With the progressive renovation of the historic city and the implementation of touristically important infrastructural arrangements, Wetzlar’s attractiveness has increased enormously, and has more and more become a destination for short-term vacationers and day tourists.
